Here at Coherence Associates (and soon to be at the Coherence Training Institute) not only do we provide clinical services to patients, part of our mission is to be able to help other clinicians and organizations to better understand all areas of mental health. As such our clinicians are willing and able to speak and train on a number of topics.
Because psychotherapy is a fee for service business, this means then when clinicians are not actively practicing they don’t get paid for their time. Unlike in many agencies, where individuals get paid by the hour of work, in private practice clinicians get paid by the session. This means that when clinicians take time out of their day to speak, or train others, and to prepare for the engagement, they are losing out on what clinical income they could be earning.
Here at Coherence the prices of speaking vary on the length and size of the engagement. Our rates are divided into a number of different categories. The rate categories are:
Full Day – Based on the clinicians full clinical day plus a few hours for preparation.
Half Day – Based on the half of the clinicians clinical day plus a few hours for preparation
90 Minute – Based on clinical time plus preparation
60 Minute – Based on clinical time plus preparation
If traveling is involved, generally travel expenses are covered if the travel is greater than 50 miles. For overnight or longer trips, lodging is generally provided as well. Though sometimes these can be negotiated.
Most clinicians have allotted some time on their schedule for pro bono engagements, but these are usually planned well in advance and usually are part of that clinician’s long term goals and training.
Now that some understanding of how the rates are determined for speaking let us go into a breakdown of some of the standard speaking rates. There are also a number of categories of speakers at Coherence, note that the rates for our CEO, Sara Gilman, MFT., tend to be significantly higher based her experience not only clinically, but also as a speaker and presenter. Any of our associates, however, are more than capable of training in some of the same areas. We also offer business consulting for mental health and medical practices that are growing, or would like to grow, as well as peak performance management training offered by our CEO.

Sometimes based on need, circumstances, and prior relationships these numbers can be negotiated up or down. These, however, are the starting rates for speaking engagements for Coherence.
